Biography
The book, On the Way to a Grammar of Free Musical Speech, is based on the entire musical knowledge and experiences I gathered throughout a long active life as a bassist and contrabass clarinetist (born 1954 in Trier, Germany), up to this day.
Rock, Jazz, as well as a special form of modern Chamber Music (adaptations of the music of Bartók combined with free improvisation), were the realms of music I delved into. The main stations of my activities were the German New Wave band Ideal (1979 – 1983), a multi-media-project called Optisches Konzert (1989/90), and the Deep Down Clarinet Duo with Jazz clarinetist Theo Joergensmann (since 2009). My actual musical projects are, together with young musicians, the Progressive Funk band FfunkofF, and the Synthie-Jazz project personen (4).
Mein Buch, On the Way to a Grammar of Free Musical Speech, basiert auf meinem gesamten musikalischen Wissen und all meinen Erfahrungen, die ich während eines langen aktiven Lebens als Bassist und Kontrabassklarinettist (geb. 1954 in Trier) bis zum heutigen Tag sammeln konnte.
Rock, Jazz, sowie eine besondere Form moderner Kammermusik (Adaptionen der Musik Bartóks, kombiniert mit freier Improvisation) waren die musikalischen Gebiete, in die ich eingetaucht bin. Die wichtigsten Stationen meiner Aktivitäten waren die deutsche NDW-Band Ideal (1979 – 1983), das Multimedia-Project Optisches Konzert (1989/90), sowie das Deep Down Clarinet Duo mit dem Jazzklarinettisten Theo Jörgensmann (seit 2009). Meine aktuellen Projekte, mit jungen Musikern, sind die Progressive Funk Band FfunkofF und das Synthie-Jazz-Projekt personen (4).
Up to this day, I have always endeavoured to pass my musical knowledge on to young musicians, and this is the reason why I wrote this book. In the town where I live today, Schwerin, Germany, I coach several bands, including an improvising ensemble, where I try to convey the book’s concepts. Those have aroused the attention of some mathematicians, and together with one of them, Dr Kathlén Kohn, I wrote an article, The Complex of non-chromatic Scales, for a German math journal in 2017 (see 'The Book's Idea').
- As a writer, back in 1984 I came across an ominous person calling himself Kae E, who claimed to be a Berlin tourist from the future, and whom I helped to write and publish the book Kae E, Weltallreisender (space traveller); 39 stories from the 39th century. That man has never been seen again after the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and today the book is no longer available.
On the Way to a Grammar of Free Musical Speech, on the other hand, is available (Books On Demand 2016), and I offer interested persons to hold lectures and, especially, practical musical workshops about the book’s concepts.
Ich habe es immer, bis zum heutigen Tag, angestrebt, mein musikalisches Wissen an junge Musiker weiterzugeben, und das ist auch der Grund, weshalb ich dieses Buch geschrieben habe. In Schwerin, wo ich heute lebe, coache ich mehrere Bands, einschliesslich eines Improvisations-Ensembles, in dem ich versuche, die Konzepte meines Buchs in die Arbeit einzubringen. Diese erregten die Aufmerksamkeit einiger Mathematiker, und mit einer von ihnen, Dr. Kathlén Kohn, schrieb ich 2017 für eine deutsche mathematische Zeitschrift einen Artikel, Der Komplex der nichtchromatischen Skalen:

- in meiner Laufbahn als Schriftsteller begegnete ich vor langen Jahren, 1984, einer merkwürdigen Person namens Kae E, der behauptete, ein Berlin-Tourist aus der Zukunft zu sein. Dieser Mann ist nach dem Berliner Mauerfall 1989 nie wieder gesehen worden, und heute ist das Buch nicht mehr erhältlich.
On the Way to a Grammar of Free Musical Speech dagegen ist erhältlich, und ich biete interessierten Personen und Organisationen an, Vorträge über meine Methoden zu halten und insbesondere praktische musikalische Workshops zu veranstalten.
